Orlando Shooting

I don’t want to be the one to talk about the Orlando shooting in this way but I am going to do it because there are many problems that need to be addressed. I would hate it if I got hate for this but since it is my honest opinion and I feel the need to share it, here it goes. This opinion belittles no group to my own observations.
It was a hate crime and a terrorist attack. That much is certain but did you know the shooter was a registered Democrat and a normal United States citizen before this event? We don’t know if there is a mental health issue.
The problem is the natural assumption that we are over racism and homophobia when these civil rights issues have seemingly been solved. It is a natural indicator that a person can be targeted by terrorism and consumed by hate. It is an indicator of something that is happening everyday. Whether it be the Charleston shooting or other shootings in the past, this event is an indicator that we have to be more aware of the people that can commit these crimes…
no matter what person they are. No matter the religion, race, sexual orientation or politics.
Maybe this is by a national discussion on mental health or the second amendment. We cannot pretend that this issue is going away. We cannot pretend that there aren’t terrorists wanting to kill us, that there aren’t people who can become killers whether crazy or fueled by hate. We need to have reasonable discussion about the possible future attacks because they too might be subject to random occurrence.
We need to have a discussion about mental health and human behavior. About hate and homophobia and Islamophobia. About domestic terrorism.
We need to not be swayed by our politics and our feelings but we must make sure that this tragedy never happens again. Hopefully my generation (the Millennials) can join together on this and find answers not swayed by political rhetoric or hatred but by rationalization and common sense.
